- So this is how liberty dies — with thunderous applause. [Star Wars III, Revenge Of The Sith]
Boris Balkan (Frank Langella)
- Mumbo jumbo, mumbo jumbo. Mumbo jumbo! Mumbo jumbo. [describing the ceremonies of social devil worshippers (though he was himself seeking to obtain real power by collecting books authored by Satan), The Ninth Gate]
Thelma Bates (Jemima Rooper)
- I'm a ghost, you're a witch, and he's a fallen angel. Anything's possible. [Hex]
Cable
- You've got to be taught / To hate and fear, / You've got to be taught / From year to year, / It's got to be drummed / In your dear little ear / You've got to be carefully taught. // You've got to be taught to be afraid / Of people whose eyes are oddly made, / And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade, / You've got to be carefully taught. // You've got to be taught before it's too late, / Before you are six or seven or eight, / To hate all the people your relatives hate, / You've got to be carefully taught! [South Pacific, Rodgers & Hammerstein]
Marcus Cole (Jason Carter)
- I used to think it was terrible that life was so unfair. Then I thought "Wouldn't it be much worse if life really were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us occur because we actually deserve it." [Babylon 5]
Thomas Dagget (Elias Koteas)
- Some people lose their faith because heaven shows them too little, but how many people lose their faith because heaven shows them too much? [The Prophecy]
- Did you ever notice how in the Bible, whenever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel? [The Prophecy]
The Devil (John Glover)
- God's universe is not like the American legal system : you do something, you pay for it. [Brimstone]
Tyler Durden
- Don't think of this as extinction. Think of this as downsizing. [Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk]
- You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, and we are all part of the same compost pile. [Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk]
Gabriel (Christopher Walken)
- Study your math — key to the universe. [The Prophecy]
- I'm an angel. I kill first-borns while their mamas watch. I turn cities into salt. I even, when I feel like it, rip the souls from little girls and from now 'til kingdom come, the only thing you can count on, in your existence, is never understanding why. [The Prophecy]
- Let's understand each other. I sang the first hymn when the stars were born. And, long ago, I announced to a young woman, Mary, who it was she was expecting. On the other hand, I've turned rivers into blood, kings into cripples, cities into salt. So, I don't think that I have to explain myself to you. [The Prophecy II]
Jack Arnold Alexander Tancred Gurney, 14th Earl of Gurney (Peter O'Toole)
- When did I realise I was God? Well, I was praying and I suddenly realised I was talking to myself. [The Ruling Class]
Hospitaler (David Thewlis)
- I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I've seen the lunacy of fanatics of every demonination be called the will of God. I've seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves. And goodness, what God desires, is here [head] and here [heart], by what you decide to do every day you will be a good man, or not. [Kingdom Of Heaven]
Maya Larkin (Winona Ryder)
- If you really believed in God, Father, why is it so inconceivable to you that his adversary would be just as real? [Lost Souls]
Georgia L. Lass (Ellen Muth)
- Whoever first said "It's the journey, not the destination," never took the bus. One meaning of the word 'commute' is 'to shorten a prison sentence'. Commuting is a prison sentence. Freedoms are being systematically stripped away — your freedom of space, freedom of information, and freedom of smell. It would be enough to kill me if I weren't already dead. [The Bicycle Thief, Dead Like Me]
- Experience has taught me that interest begets expectation, and expectation begets disappointment, so the key to avoiding disappointment is to avoid interest. A equals B equals C equals A, or whatever. I also don't have a lot of interest in being a good person or a bad person. From what I can tell, either way, you're screwed. Bad people are punished by society's laws, and good people are punished by Murphy's Law. [Pilot, Dead Like Me]
Harry Lime (Orson Welles)
- In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love. They had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.
Lestat de Lioncourt
- God kills indiscriminately and so shall we, for no creatures under God are as we are, none so like Him as ourselves. [Interview With The Vampire, Anne Rice]
Reverend Lovejoy [The Simpsons]
- This so called new religion is nothing but a pack of weird rituals and chants designed to take away the money of fools. Let us say the Lord's prayer forty times, but first let's pass the collection plate.
Holland Manners (Sam Anderson)
- The world doesn't work in spite of evil, Angel, it works with us — it works because of us. … You see, if there wasn't evil in every single one of them out there, why, they wouldn't be people, they'd all be angels. [Reprise, Angel]
Lilah Morgan (Stephanie Romanov)
- Funny thing about black and white : you mix it together and you get gray, and it doesn't matter how much white you try and put back in, you're never going to get anything but gray. [Habeas Corpses, Angel]
Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) / Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson)
- FM : Why would God allow this to happen? Why do bad things happen to good people? Religion has masqueraded as the paranormal since the dawn of time to justify some of the most horrible acts in history.
DS : I was raised to believe that God has his reasons, however mysterious.
FM : He may well have his reasons, but he seems to use a lot of psychotics to carry out his job-orders. [All Souls, The X Files]
Nemi
- Blokes in naff clothes, three minute videos with close ups of gyrating women's asses, banal, misogynistic lyrics about things four-year-old boys think are cool said by men who can't sing, without guitars, with appalling language, as they punch into the air… what's not to like? [speaking of hip-hop, September 2008]
- I'll tell you what I want: I want people to acknowledge their religion as faith, not fact — and in doing so show respect for others who don't share their beliefs. I want people to focus on how they live rather than what happens to them when they die. And I'll have no condescending look from those so-called church goers who get worked up over my appearance. I'm not a particularly pious person, but I reckon I've more respect for Jesus than those brats over there with their knitted jumpers and glow-in-the-dark crucifixes. [in response to an waiter's innocent inquiry as to what she wants (to eat), December 2004]
Gary Numan
- My Jesus is a collector of pain / My Jesus says / "Pain will prove you love me." [My Jesus, Pure, 2000]
- I don't need faith / Forgiveness of sin / I don't need saving / I don't need lies. [The Angel Wars, Exile, 1997]
- In his mercy / He will bring the disease / In his mercy / He will burn the oceans / In his mercy / He will tear the sky down / In his mercy / He will make pain eternal [Dominion Day, Exile, 1997]
- They kneel down, praise God / Shout allelujah / Lift up their eyes when they pray / When children kill children / Don't it make them wonder? / Don't it make them question their faith? [A Question Of Faith, Salvation, 1994]
- So, I prayed / But you weren't listening / Making Miracles? / So, I begged / But you were far away / Saving souls perhaps? / So, I screamed / But she was very small / And you have worlds to mend / So, she died / And you were glorious / But you were somewhere else. [A Prayer For The Unborn, Pure, 2000]
- The equivalent of me standing in the middle of a field looking up at the sky and saying to God 'Come on then, what have you got?' I don't think God's coming, I don't think it's even there. I have actually stood outside looking at a particularly beautiful sunset and said to God 'Prove it. Turn the sky green, just for a second. You can't, can you?' [speaking of Desire, Salvation, 1994]
- If somebody could walk up to me now and convince me that I was wrong, and that God does exist, I would tend to believe that the Exile idea is nearer to the truth than anything I've ever heard from the pulpit. To find out that God was real would be the most frightening thing that I could possibly imagine. [regarding the concept in Exile, where heaven and hell are the same place, God and Satan the same creature, with only the perception of individuals deciding which is true for them]
- I am not religious, quite the opposite. It would seem, particularly at the moment, that in certain countries to deny having faith is virtually to admit to being a worshipper of the devil. Such is the fear, hate and hostility created by the believers of this so called all forgiving God. I worship nothing. Not a good lie nor a dark one. If nature is proof of God's amazing creation then I have truly seen the light, and the light is black. Nature is genius at its most cruel and savage. No benevolent God could have come up with such an outrage.
Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart)
- "Matter of internal security", the age-old cry of the oppressor. [The Hunted, Star Trek: The Next Generation]
- History has shown us that strength may be useless when faced with terrorism. [The High Ground, Star Trek: The Next Generation]
Lisa Rowe (Angelina Jolie)
- Some advice, okay? Just don't point your fuckin' finger at crazy people! [Girl, Interrupted, 1999]
Bart Simpson [The Simpsons]
- Dear God, we paid for all this stuff ourselves, so thanks for nothing.
Homer Simpson [The Simpsons]
- God bless those pagans.
- Suppose we've chosen the wrong god? Every time we go to church we're just making him madder and madder.
- I'm not a bad guy! I work hard and I love my kids. So why should I spend half my Sunday hearing about how I'm going to hell?
- Lisa, if the Bible has taught us nothing else — and it hasn't — it's that girls should stick to girl's sports, such as hot oil wrestling and foxy boxing and such and such.
Lisa Simpson [The Simpsons]
- Prayer : the last refuge of a scoundrel.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
- A law that was written / In the blood of your victims / Born out of pure resentment / And what of your baby daughters / And what of these shameless slaughters / Lying buried in the sand? [protesting about 'honour' killings, The Whole Price Of Blood, 1987]
Alan Shore (James Spader)
- When the weapons of mass destruction thing turned out to be not true, I expected the American people to rise up. Ha! They didn't. Then, when the Abu Ghraib torture thing surfaced and it was revealed that our government participated in rendition, a practice where we kidnap people and turn them over to regimes who specialize in torture, I was sure then the American people would be heard from. We stood mute. Then came the news that we jailed thousands of so-called terrorists suspects, locked them up without the right to a trial or even the right to confront their accusers. Certainly, we would never stand for that. We did. And now, it's been discovered the executive branch has been conducting massive, illegal, domestic surveillance on its own citizens. You and me. And I at least consoled myself that finally, finally the American people will have had enough. Evidentially, we haven't. In fact, if the people of this country have spoken, the message is we're okay with it all. Torture, warrantless search and seizure, illegal wiretappings, prison without a fair trial - or any trial, war on false pretenses. We, as a citizenry, are apparently not offended. There are no demonstrations on college campuses. In fact, there's no clear indication that young people seem to notice. Well, Melissa Hughes noticed. Now, you might think, instead of withholding her taxes, she could have protested the old fashioned way. Made a placard and demonstrated at a Presidential or Vice-Presidential appearance, but we've lost the right to that as well. The Secret Service can now declare free speech zones to contain, control and, in effect, criminalize protest. Stop for a second and try to fathom that. At a presidential rally, parade or appearance, if you have on a supportive t-shirt, you can be there. If you are wearing or carrying something in protest, you can be removed. This, in the United States of America. … And what I'm most sick and tired of is how every time somebody disagrees with how the government is running things, he or she is labeled unAmerican. … I object to government abusing its power to squash the constitutional freedoms of its citizenry. And, God forbid, anybody challenge it. They're smeared as being a heretic. [Stick It, Boston Legal]
Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar)
- Note to self — religion: freaky. [What's My Line (pt 1), Buffy The Vampire Slayer]
- What kind of God would demand her life for something she has no control over? [Spiral, Buffy The Vampire Slayer]
River Tam (Summer Glau)
- Bible's broken. Contradictions, false logistics. Doesn't make sense. … It's broken, it doesn't make sense. [Jaynestown,
Firefly]
Deanna Troi (Marina Surtis)
- That's the problem with believing in a supernatural being : trying to determine what he wants. [Who Watches The Watchers, Star Trek : The Next Generation]
Stevie Wonder
- The man hates superstition / But he believes in God / I think that's inconsistent / I think that's really odd / When you believe in things that you don't understand then you suffer / Superstition ain't the way [Superstition]
